Neopronouns – Are You Up On This New Evolution of English-Language Terms of Identity?

A screen shot of the New York Times Article "A Guide to Neopronouns" by Ezra Marcus showing an illustration self-portrait by @katetorias with the words Pri/Prin/Prins/Princeself next to Princeself. Pri is shown with tan skin, green hair, white glasses, a gold crown against a pink background.

Noun-self pronouns. Words created to be pronouns that are not gendered. As reported by Ezra Marcus in the New York Times, “A Guide to Neopronouns

This article was fascinating, and I really loved that it included three self-portraits by artists who use Neopronouns, including this one by @katetorias.

I learned so much reading it, including the fact that in a survey by the Trevor Project of 40,000 Queer Youth on pronoun use,

found that one-quarter of them used nonbinary pronouns. (Participants were recruited from late 2019 through early 2020 by ads on social media.) Most said they used common pronouns like “he,” “she” and “they.”

Just 4 percent said they used neopronouns, including “ze/zir,” and “fae/faer,” often in combination with other pronouns.

The article is well-worth reading! And it’s a good reminder that language exists to serve us, so we can express ourselves. As such, it evolves. And that’s a good thing.

Really loved the illustrations included in the article. This one, by Anna Stevens-Hill, was amazing.

The light in me recognizes and acknowledges the light in you, no matter your pronoun, or neopronoun, or if you choose to not use any pronoun at all.
