Join Melanie Gillman, Rob Sanders, and Me(!) for a Discussion of “LGBTQ+ History in Children’s Books” on Oct 12, 2021

I’m really delighted to be part of this conversation. We’re going to have a panel discussion, and with the help of everyone attending, put together a crowd-sourced list of wonderful Kid Lit that covers and includes LGBTQ+ History! You can register for the free webinar here.

Here’s the scoop:

Lerner Publishing Group presents children’s & YA book creators to talk about their books in honor of LGBT+ History Month in October. We’ll cover the importance of queer history in literature for today’s young readers, how readers can find role models in both fiction and nonfiction, and the difference and importance of recognizing queer history in addition to LGBTQ+ Pride in June,

Participants will leave this powerful webinar with inspiration as well as a wonderful, crowd-sourced list of resources for teachers, librarians, educators, and parents looking to share LGBTQ+ history with young readers.

You can suggest books in the registration form below, or via our Google form here: https://forms.gle/ZzpnYgCqcCN922KV6.

We can’t wait to see you!

My fellow panelists:

Melanie Gillman is the author/illustrator of the graphic novel Stage Dreams, a “rollicking queer western adventure” with a lot of “old West” history, and other titles.

Rob Sanders is the author of a bunch of fascinating Queer History picture books, including Two Grooms on a Cake: The Story of America’s First Gay Wedding, Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, Stonewall: A Building. An Uprising. A Revolution, and more.

And I’m so inspired by history – Queer as a Five-Dollar Bill, and of course, No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves are ALL about Queer history and how it can empower us today.

The panel will be moderated by the wonderful Rachel Zugschwert, VP of Marketing at Lerner Publishing Group, who took this idea and made it a reality – thank you, Rachel!

I hope you’ll join us at 10am Pacific/Noon Central/1pm Eastern on Oct 12, 2021!

The light in me recognizes and acknowledges the light in you,
Lee

P.S. – Malinda Lo wasn’t able to join the panel, but to make sure it made the list, I’ve already added Malinda’s remarkable “Last Night at the Telegraph Club.” It’s historical fiction, and includes extensive backmatter about Queer San Francisco and Lesbian lives during the days of the Red Scare. What books will you add?
